What was the inspiration for this story?

The story was the result of a literary competitive urge. I was at a writing workshop, and another writer had submitted a story of asteroid combat. I thought “this is pretty good, but I bet I could write something better.” Competition between writers is productive of more good work than you might expect.

I had been reading a lot about urban combat, combat within structures, and other related topics, some of them on the always-interesting BLDGBLOG.
